Alto went from rookie pilot to ace in less than 26 episodes, I think Mirage has enough time.
I think she felt pressured by the family name and is currently out here to prove herself.
Then again, she is in the so-called Delta squadron, which judging by the reaction of Wion, is a pretty big deal. You can't join a big deal without the support of skills.
And knowing the Jeniuses... it'd be unlikely that Mirage was accepted due to family influence.
Well that was... something, if I had to describe it with one word it would be "meh", well maybe not that, let's say it was OK because I liked many things I saw, but for example I was much more excited after watching Frontier's first episode deculture version, although, the story and setting really caught my interest.
Spoiler for About Characters and other stuff.:
-Freyja: I liked her, she was energetic, fun and not annoying, but who knows how her character will develop, I mean I liked Ranka the first couple episodes of Frontier and then not so much.
-Hayate: He was ok maybe a bit boring because he's the classic gifted guy that doesn't know what he would like to do with his life, and most likely that will change throughout the series. I liked how he piloted his work destroid, like he was dancing or ice-skating.
-Mirage: She was about what I expected, the serious girl but it seems she will have a funny side too, someone mentioned this earlier and I agree that she reminds me of Gamlin (maybe he's her dad and Mylene her mom?).
From the Idol group I liked Mikumo the most, it was awesome how she cured that Zentradi in the middle of the battle (she gives off some serious Sheryl vibes and that's great), my favorite part was when the kingdom of wind attacked even if it's unknown yet why, but I suspect someone from their side is responsible for the Var Syndrome, and also maybe one of the pilots is the guy Freyja was going to marry.
Now the thing I didn't like, or put me off was the whole Idol show and the transformations, I mean yes Ranka and Sheryl changed outfits with holograms and all but here it's an actual magical girl transformation with profile shots, catchphrase and everything, also I don't know yet how they control the V-drones and what they can and can't do with them, it seemed like too much for me, and finally I think it was a waste that the VF-31's backpack ended being just a battery
Still many things caught my interest, like the Var Syndrome coming from someone singing ala emulators, the new races and their interaction with humanity or the tone of the series being a mix between 7 and Pus, which was noticeable even just within this episode. So of course I'll watch this, I'll just have to get used to the Magical girls Walkure.

The original YF-30 Chronos had a backpack that was modular, aka it could be exchanged for a different type of backpack. Considering that the VF-31 is a direct evolution of the YF-30 I expect that we'll see other types of mission packs for it in the future.

But how much can she improve during the course of the series? Not much, I think.
Like you said Mirage is one of main character, you can expect a lot of time.
Besides, she got surprise but still able to counter quickly, i won't call this "average at best".

As seen with Chuck's VF-31 his backpack is a radome and mobile stage. This is important as a precursor to the Var syndrome is a Fold wave reaction.
Someone on SpaceBattles speculated before the episode that somebody figured out how the Protodevlin make Zentradi go crazy but didn't have delivery method. Then Frontier happened with the proliferation of Fold Quartz.

Being meltran and Jenius already make her not lacking anymore, yeah you can say "just by race/name?", but it just first 30 minutes of Macross Delta, there is not much thing we can say for now.
Btw it's pretty easy to know why she's the one getting shot down, it may even nothing to do with her skill, it just...staff trying to make a scene that let her meet MC again you know...PV1 showed a scene about them which should be in episode 2.

I didn't missing any points, it just really nothing to say yet, and even she is average, it may end up even better if the staff can make her as hardworking character(well, at least she looks hardworking type i think, not sure about talent yet), of course that depends on directing&writing skill of the show.
Maybe i should not use "shot down", but it's very likely she's going to land and leave the cockpit at least for a while to match one of PV scene.

Well let's hope they have a good writer then. Kawamori can write some pretty shitty female main characters (Jeanne Kaguya, anyone?) so that's not encouraging.
