If Shin Chuuka Ichiban is a sequel to the 1995 anime as it's looking to be, you'll need to have seen the previous entry in the series to make sense of who everyone is and what exactly they're adventuring for. Although I guess if the anime does do a recap of sorts for the uninitiated it might not matter that much.

If the teaser is any indication of the first episode of Shin CI then the anime's story definitely won't start from the beginning. So, newbies can only hope for some kind of anime-provided recap. Otherwise, the 90s show & manga are there for you to fill that blank.

is this a complete reboot or continuation of the original?

I'm a fan of the original.

It's the sequel to the anime.

Interesting so this show is somewhat of a reboot of the original show. I can’t remember the episode number but this the silky chicken episode

Now that is a really strange decision by the studio. They didn't do a complete reboot from the beginning but also chose to repeat the story starting from the nostalgic Black Chicken episode (which I like). So, what is their goal here? Considering that the show jumped right in the middle of the story, they don't seem to want to attract newcomers that much, but if they just want to cater to longtime fans, why went this further back and rehash the story before the encounter with the underground society? Huh.....

Aside from that, I like the episode. It has that oldschool episodic feel before Mao have to face the dark society. The ED is nice too.

So, from the anime POV, it's a partial reboot. From the manga POV, it's exactly what it says on the tin, an adaptation of Shin Chuuka Ichiban, the sequel to Chuuka Ichiban (in which Mao went from apprentice to Super Chef before taking a sabbatical to travel with Shirou).

Manga comparison: it looks a bit more haremish than in the manga, with Tiya's longing gaze at Mao and promising to move to Guanzhou instead of just exporting the chicken there.

Mei Lin and the other Super Chef weren't supposed to be there.

What you need to know: cooking is Serious Business, China regularly holds a very official, very prestigious competition to earn the title of Super Chef. Mao tied in the last one, becoming the youngest ever Super Chef along with some slightly older contestant.

Before that he worked in some big and prestigious restaurant in Guanzhou. The sous-Chef there, Mei Lin's father, is also a Super Chef. The Head Chef has even more clout, but I don't think we've ever seen him cook.

And before that, he was raised by his mom who was secretly(?) also a very talented chef, but died before the story began, and his big sister.

Oh, and Shirou, if you wondered, is some half-Japanese, half-Chinese guy who's decided he was Mao's apprentice.

I've never watched the previous adaptation or read the manga, but I thought this first episode was accessible enough. Since Wikipedia tells me the original TV series ended 8 months before the manga, I wonder if the plan for this new series is to start by remaking some material that had already been adapted in order to acclimate us, and then skip ahead to the stuff that had never been animated before.

Edit: and it looks like it's going to be just 12 episodes long, since the BD-box with the entire series is set to come out in February already.

Another change from both the manga and the previous anime: Chou Yu doesn't come to pay his respects at the grave. Instead, in this version the group leaves Chicken Town without ever meeting Chou Yu.

It really is a strange decision to reboot the anime from the Chicken Town arc, and changing some things to boot. It's clearly still based on the previous anime since Mei Li is with them in the story (the manga only had Mao and Shilou in Chicken Town), yet at the same time they're already changing up some stuff in this anime that deviates from both the source material and the previous anime.

Looks like they're speeding through everything to get to the new material, they made the shumai battle 1 episode only and now they're jumping over the intro of another character to introduce the villains early IIRC.

A little bit of rushing this episode but I'm glad they make Xie Lu's first impression less dick-ish than the OG anime. It's still very enjoyable despite the faster pace. And....SCI just can't wait to introduce the underground society eh?

Oh btw, here's the dish from the Black Chicken episode:

Just marathoned episode 3 & 4 which I think is the proper way to watch them. The pacing is still a bit fast, but for a duel that's supposed to have time-limit, it's kinda understandable that Mao want to go as fast as possible. The masked cook is almost as amusing as I remember but since he didn't wear gold this time, he looks a bit more threatening and less ridiculous than the one in the 90s anime.

Also, it always bugs me how Mao never had the urge to put Meili in a more relaxed lying down position when she was dying from poisoning yet being too busy gawking at his master's cooking skill during his duel. It's supposed to be a life & death situation and Mao just let Meili down in her original collapsed position like a rag doll throughout the episode (and then the same thing happened to his master). You can't tell me that he didn't have the time to care for Meili a little bit.

So this show ended on a cliffhanger, but thankfully it's getting a sequel. I really enjoyed it, even though it clearly rushed through or skipped a lot of material. After checking out the title of each episode of the '90s TV series, I can see that this new adaptation only covered chapters that had already been animated before, but for the sake of older fans, I hope the sequel finally covers some new stuff. Are the silhouettes in the promo video familiar to anyone here?

So this is basically a split-cour release like No Guns Life?
