If you wondering when does the beta game started, It's 22nd October 1998. Look at the top left corner of this picture.

I love how they put such a detail.

I played tons of Lineage II when I was younger, around 2004. Both Log horizon and Sword art online are influenced heavily by that game.

Lineage I was realeased september 3rd 1998 according to wikipedia.

Is there some other MMORPG that was released exactly at 22nd October 1998, or are they hinting at Lineage I here?

Not really. Their inspiration are mostly pre-WoW MMORPG, especially Everquest.

Just pointing out that both Lineage I, and Lineage II, are "pre-WOW MMORPG". Hmm, Everquest, never really did play that. But now that I read about it you certainly seem to be right. Portals for traveling etc. Wikipedia says it was realeas 1999, and other sources says it had its beta in august 1998. I think we have a winner

It's amazing the kind of attention this show gives to the tiniest of details.

Well, the author of the novels did say that he used to play EQ. So it explains why LogHora felt the most MMOish of all those MMORPG-genre anime series.

Losing memories? We Valverave now.

Great episode, although I'm feeling the lowbie dungeon parts a bit are getting really draggy.

Valaverave wishes it could be this good.

Also, this story predates it.

If my memory serve me right, the Dungeon's Master Guide from D&D described the experience points you accumulated as the memories you make with your party (yeah, I killed 150 orcs that day, that was hilarious wwww). So, the concept is very very old.

not much to say about this episode, except that the mage guy probably missed a bargain during that scene:

shiroe:"please, I need info about the world"
ragel:"sure, I know everything about this world, what's your offer?"
shiroe:"I will tell you what we adventurers know about the apocalypse"
ragel:"hmm, not enough, what if you throw in that child you've brought with you?"
akatsuki:"..."
shiroe:"you drive a hard bargain, but because your info is more valuable i'll take the offer!"
ragel:*puts akatsuki inside a large bag and hauls her away*

You know, how long was it after the Apocalypse that we first saw Rudy? That's a pretty short amount of time for him to decide to come up with his clever scheme here.

Certainly intriguing new information about the world of Elder Tales. Though the more we hear, the less clear cut everything becomes. Different time passages aside, we do have a pretty solid connection between the world of Elder Tales and our world. The appearance of Adventurers coincides with the start of the Elder Tales beta, and certain highly exceptional players have caught the attention of the Elder Tales world as well knowned adventurers. So it seems likely that OUR players were definitely influencing this world.

...yet this doesn't explain everything. While there's plenty of signs that the Adventurers are influencing the world of Elder Tales pre Apoc, that still doesn't explain how the world we're seeing here differs so greatly from that of the Elder Tales game. The connection clearly was not totally two way. If the people of the land acted the way we've seen them so far on computer screens, people would notice they weren't just bots right away. Not to mention all these major things (like magical weapons of mass destruction and the pre-apoc history of this world) that don't quite line up with the game.

Could the game of Elder Tales have been some kind of clumsy, abstract, simplified interface that allowed people in our world to interact with Elder Tales. All the complex actions of people in the Elder Tales world are broken down to simple ones that can easily be projected onto a computer screen. A person of the land can sit down infront of an adventurer and start discussing profound, nonscripted philosophy, and all the player sees on his computer screen is an NPC delievering stock lines.

So Shiroe started playing Elder Tale "98" years ago (aka somewhere in 2010), and the Elder Tale public beta was opened "240" years ago, October 1998. The part that confuses me is that the story told in this episode started from around 350 years ago - in the real world, late 1988 or early 1989. What form could Elder Tale have taken back then? MMORPGs didn't exist in the late 1980s (unless you count MUDs, I guess)... did it start off as a normal, single-player RPG ala Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest?

in fictional works it should be unlikely a direct reference,
but according to the list on wikipedia
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_MMORPGs

the games released in 1998 were:
Clan Lord (18 October 1998)
Lineage (September 3, 1998)
Underlight (1998 ??)

Perhaps the creator of Elder Tales was a tabletop RPG nerd who really wanted to make the ultimate "tabletop" game that would use internet to unite players from all over the world. This could also explain the on-the-fly translator feature in the original game. Perhaps the creator was that much of a perfectionist. Then cue the imagination power of hundreds of thousands people + the noosphere. Said noosphere is part of the title of the update that led to the Catastrophe. By taking the Noosphere into account, it becomes Haruhi-level of "They will it, the world is.", as our local ojii-san who is in this subforum said it.

Wow, I hadn't noticed that at all. Thanks for putting that in here!

Great episode overall. The added information about the world was very much welcome.

I haven't noticed on Rudy until you guys pointed out that he's a Lander. But wait, how come his level is being displayed? Still, he's a moron to me!

On the other hand, dying along with your memories is worse than having it modified by Sugou!

Several months by now.

But Rudy doesn't need to have come up with this scheme after the Apocalypse. Even before then, Adventurers existed. Rudy probably grew up hearing all sorts of stories about them and began to idolize them to the point where he decided to become one.

He's a kid with an impossible dream.

How Naotsugu, Nyanta, and Marielle not notice that thing with Rudy?

And Akatsuki being a blonde during the explanations. (Come on, you're a 20-year old college student!!!)

I think the author said he chose a date between Ultima Online and Everquest.

It also means vets like Nyanta, Marielle and Naotsugu especially would have failed to notice it during training camp. Marielle is somewhat understandable, since she's basically in it for herself and having a beach vacation instead of training the low levelers, but Naotsugu's had personal contact with Rudy.
