Actually, because of the way Sazae-san counts, they are nearing 6000. (Each 24 minutes episode is composed of 3 stories, each of which is numbered.)

Think of it like The Simpsons, there is no real overall plot with each episode/story having little relavence to the others which allows for an almost infinite number of stories.

So I gander the animation has improved drastically thru the course of the series...I still can't believe that show has been on since the 60's... I don't know how anyone can come up with 6000 different ideas on a show...Do the characters get older or just stay the same age??

But when comparing it with other anime shows for length, it's more appropriate to use the previous number.....

Really, think of it like the simpsons, except the stories are more of the nostalgia type and the plots aren't intertwined. The animation has improved but the characters still look the same.

Except the previous number doesn't really show the fact that its been on for 37 years.

Actually wait.. Doraemon has 2000 episodes? It should only have around 1400 because there is a 10 year gap between when it started and when Sazae-san started.

Edit: Confirmed, Doraemon 1973 has 52, Doreamon 1979-2005 has ~1100, Doraemon 2005 has 54.

Doraemon is still running. Nobita and his pals should consider looking into collecting pension and social insurence by this point.

Isn't sazae-san not only the longest (in time period, not in episode) running anime, but it's actually the longest running television program of any kind, animated or otherwise, in the entire world?

I think I heard that somewhere...

With help from Yahoo and Guiness World Records, I got the answer in 5 seconds:

Guiness World Record for Longest-Running TV Show:

Meet the Press, 2649 shows

So...is that series still on-going? If not, given 10-20 year more (counting that the show is aired once per week, counting 24 minutes as an episode), Sazae-san/Doraemon would be able to surpass that number.

The Guiness World Records only recognised its record on February 4 2001.

The show is still running according to wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meet_the_Press

What's more is that written in the wiki article, 'Meet the Press' 1992 became a 44 minute(1 hour with commercials) show, it originally was a 22 minute show. You can say from 1992 - 2006, 15 years of 'Meet the Press', is actually around 29/30 years worth of tv.

Which equates to having dominance(?) in terms of length then.

While that's all well and good...

The 15,000th televised episode of Guiding Light will air in September 2006. Due to this series run, it is not only considered to be the longest soap opera, but the longest series of any show created.

The program was created by legendary soap writer Irna Phillips, and began as an NBC radio serial on January 25, 1937 before moving to CBS on June 30, 1952, as a televised serial.
(emphasis mine)

Beat that.
