Okay, just binge watched the new series, and one of my first impressions of Hayate is he is the weakest mecha pilot protagonist I have seen in a while, in terms of attitude and motivation. At least for the first 5 episodes. Then 6 got here and it was like, okay character development has started. The first episodes his brushing off combat training after joining a group he met during a battle seemed very stupid. Then in episode 5 Messer motivates him after the mock battle, and in episode 6 he commits to battle saving Mirage. So he is getting better, and we still have 20 episodes to go.
