Irene has elf ears. This makes her easy to remember and sets her apart from Noel and Sophia. When we see those elf-ears, we think Irene. It's an extra item to tag with her angular face, which reinforces memory of her. It might also imply, symbolically, certain things about her personality. (Maybe that she's inscrutable, introspective, pragmatic, hardened and aloof? Basically an "elf"? *shrugs*) Whatever the case, it sure makes us think about why she has elf ears and makes us attach some sort symbolism to her, which is enough to get the audience interested in her. There is also one other Claymore that I know of with elf-ears... Spoiler for One other character with elf ears...:

Currently reading the manga past the point where the anime left off at. Is that a good thing? I hope I will still continue to look forward to the anime even after reading the manga. |

Yeah, read the manga if you want. I'm sure I don't have to tell you that you don't get that weekly suspense if you just watched the anime. The anime's animation seems to be spotty here-and-there, but I still watch it because it gives me an anime fix. Then again, the manga costs money if you're the type to just buy it. *shrugs* |

Nicknames are names given to Claymore's for special traits that set them very apart from other Claymore's. Exsamples being Phantom Miria she has a uniq ability that no other Claymore has or has one of sutch a level its so superior to others. Except for Miria none of the others in the Fab 4 has one. Tho i do belive Clare does hold the title: Quickest Sword amoung the Claymore's for atlest a short while. Flora admited as much but its not really a known thing.
