The game developers say plans for the anime were made in 2016, but production started much later.
They also say the anime was close to wrapping up production by late 2018, before the game was even finished.

Likely the anime was made alongside the game cutscenes (which are a curious mix of 2D and 3D characters.)

I'm curious what anime-only viewers will think of this anime, especially when it assumes its viewers have played the source game (or watched Let's Play videos of it).

Certainly this won't be a problem for the Japanese, but foreign viewers might get lost with this title, esp. when the Western release of the source game is still unclear.

The anime comes out Spring 2020, which is at earliest in April 2020.

The game's Western release is for Q2 2020, which covers April-June 2020.
So earliest release will likely be in April 2020 too, about the same time as the anime.

I'm excited for this new anime but I also dreaded the fact that this being a sequel to the game. As someone who most likely won't be able to play the game, I'll certainly be lost when it comes to the anime plot since most of the protags' character development & initial world-building only happened in the game. Heck, the new trailer above seems to introduce a new protag called Clara at the center of the conflicts.
