Its probably easier to say there are a lot of sketches used out of the first few volumes but there is also a lot of "anime-original" material. I wouldn't worry about it - its a 4-koma comic strip, not exactly heavy reading if you happen to see something you saw in the anime. It'll be out of order sometimes and there will many bits skipped in the anime. They do that for comic flow and to create a marginally coherent episode.

I've been thinking of buying the 3 Lucky Star Light Novels spin-offs, but I'm worried they might be too different from the main series to bother with them. Has anyone here read them? How are they in terms of comedy and character interactions as compared to the main series?
