This was a great series where I feel like they fucked up the ending. Although the ending works in a genre sense (ie, this is a horror series and the ending is filled with that despair) I feel that thematically Kazuki's actions are terrible. It felt like Kazuki was manipulated into becoming dependent on Maria, fulfilling her wish of being needed, and I just can't help but find the idea unsettling. Not only did Maria get her wish (which is dyed in the tragedy of at least twenty people's suffering over two years) but Kazuki didn't seem to have choice since it was preordained for him to be her savior (since she unconsciously chose him, even manipulating his personality to fit into her needs). I like how the parallels work with the first novel, but I feel like they chose the wrong parallel: instead, it could have played out like this:
After Maria loses her memory, Kazuki has a unique opportunity. Just like in the Revenge Classroom, he now has an information advantage over Aya, like she used to with him. He sets himself up as the villain that she lost to in her previous life, and says that if she 'wins' she will get what she always desired: an 'Empty Box' which can allow for any type of wish. Unlike all other boxes, once Maria learns how to master this box, she can truly get perfection for her own box, which is her conscious driving goal. Thus, Kazuki styles himself a villain and uses his past knowledge (along with the other characters as allies) to corner Aya into realizing how all of her actions are causing suffering. From there, she gives up her persona and retreats into her box, where she makes her own 'wish' to be happy. Kazuki doesn't give in, dives into the box to save her, and we get a similar result to the last volume leaving out the repeating classroom. Instead, we have Maria's version of bliss. Not only does Kazuki have more agency over his actions (which simply seem like insanity) but it can bring home the driving message for the series that 'wishes' are useless. Kazuki should never need his box in order to convince Maria to change, so it seems like the relationship between the two is so distorted. Does anyone else have similar thoughts? |

Licensed by YP don't mean series will get anime in future... If it would be so then where is my Psycho Love Comedy anime? They got time for license right for Re;Zero but this series already ended so chances for additional promotion with animated series are VERY slim.
