The sword and the stone story is thought to come from a poem written in the early 13th Century called Merlin. It actually predates the lady of the lake story. As myths go, it's as valid as anything else. The lady of the lake version was written some time later in a cycle of poems called the Post-Vulgate Cycle. It all depends on the story or poem you're reading. There really isn't a main myth. Both the "sword and stone" and "lady of the lake" versions were written in France. The English at the time had a less romantic but more plausible origin for the sword.
Arthur's sword was called Caledfwich for a while, which makes sense. The earliest known references to Arthur were from Welsh sources. The name was later latinized to Caiburnus or Caliburn, which is a good thing, because I can't pronounce Caledfwich for the life of me.
When the stories travelled across the channel to continental Europe, Caliburn was altered to Excalibur.
