Akuma-kun

The manga 'Akuma-kun' by Shigeru Mizuki will be getting a new anime adaptation.

Synopsis

Quote:
When Mr. Sato, a company employee at the worlds largest electrics company, is called upon by his Boss to tutor his only son in exchange for a high ranking position within the organization, things couldn't have been peachier.

At least, that's what he thought...
Little did he know that his student to be was Ichiro Matsushita, a young boy with the mind of a genius and a terrifying hidden agenda.

It doesn't take long for Sato to realize that he is the second home tutor in as many weeks that has been sent to teach the little boy. What's even more unnerving is that the previous Tutor's whereabouts appear to be a mystery...

The little boy's true identity is revealed when he puts Sato under a curse, turning him into a lizard man and making him one of servants.
Little Ichiro Matsushita is none other than "Akuma-kun" boy genius and master of black magic. His goal? to open the portal between hell and earth, summon forth hell's most powerful demons, and enlist their help in taking over the world!

Omoshiroi. Guess the success of GGGnK 2018 emboldened them to revive another of the Master's old chestnuts. It's no stranger to animation, though not so often adapted as Kitarou.

Oh, and Kitaro will get a movie, BTW.

He already directed M3: The Dark Metal before, which was released 8 years ago.

Oh God, I must have blocked that out for being such a train wreck. It was a mixed cast more than a male lead, but in any event may this series turn out far better.

Netflix has released the entire 12-episode series. I don't binge-watch generally, but I've seen the first episode so far and it's pretty good.

Obvious (to me, anyway) that the story is by the same guy who did GeGeGe no Kitaro, and that's even before you notice that Akuma-kun's sidekick is voiced by the same actor who played Nezumi Otoko in the latest Kitaro iteration. And the normal human girl who came to Akuma-kun for help is voiced by the same actress who played Inuyama Mana.

Episode 2 has a wicked curve in it. Looks like this series is a lot darker than Kitaro, or perhaps it's just a different kind of darkness.

I can say for sure that, after watching ep 2, Akuma definitely feels like an a**hole. But its his indifference or stoicism makes him an interesting protagonist. I still don't like him half the time though .

What a hidden gem! Akuma-kun is really a story about family and friendship. Yes Ichiro is an annoying protagonist, but he does progress. Definitely worth a watch.

At the end they suggest that there could be another season. It clearly has no audience here in the US that I can see, but maybe it's doing better in Japan? Mizuki is, after all, a beloved figure.

This did indeed get really good (at least through Episode 10). Ohtsuka Akio as "Mizuki-san" was a real highlight.

Finally finished this, and I think it was quite good. Netflix does love to tease sequels that never happen, though...
