But really, Ark tends to only hard-scam people who have/tried to screw him over first.
For the rest of the soft-scams, he's basically a casino. You have a chance of getting out on top, but most of the time the House (Ark) wins.
95% of the people Ark encounters are antagonists, with the rest being 4% "loyal friends" and 1% "random passerby".
The antagonists only exist because the author needed someone who screws with Ark so he can go out and plan his revenge. None of them have a single redeeming feature, are generally the "opposite" of Ark and are a goal he will sooner or later triumph over.
Dear mom and her hospital bills can carry the "plot" only so far before the readers start dropping the series. The author needs a reason for Ark to go out and level up, and thats why these one-dimensional enemies exist.

Other than these people... who even plays such a game? Everyone either does it in order to screw (or get screwed by) Ark, with the exception of those who decide to help Ark screw others, or those who had been screwed so hard they have to help Ark screw others.

Nowhere did I say that, no need to be childish.

The plot has never been the main draw of the LN. It's always been about a guy playing an MMO, with the target audience being a country that practically made MMOs a sub-culture.

True, true... but its not about a guy playing an MMO, its about a stingy guy playing an MMO. Coupled with a lot of Deus-Ex Machina. ;D

Ha! You're right on both accounts. Though at least the DRM isn't as heavy as Weed's I-trained-this-shit-in-a-sweat-shop-so-I-got-this Macguyvering.
