This would probably be better suited in the Bleach Q&A thread. As for how he got Zangetsu...not really. Rukia stabbed him through the heart with her Zanpakutou, then there was big surge of wind (probably reiatsu...) and next thing you know Ichigo was in a Shinigami outfit and he had a Zanpakutou to boot. Well, and he slashed the Hollow big time, but that doesn't seem that impressive anymore.

That was for how he gained the Shinigami powers in the first place. His sword didn't take the form of Zangetsu until he regained his Shinigami abilities under Urahara Kisuke's training, after taking a beating from Byakuya. That was way back, before anyone had even mentioned taking a trip to Soul Society.

Ichigo also underwent two or three tests by Zangetsu to see if Ichigo was "worthy" of wielding him. The first involved finding the proper box that Zangetsu was held in amongst hundreds of other boxes. I believe this also took place while training under Urahara, and occured during a sequence inside of Ichigo's "inner world." The second involved Ichigo facing off against his darker (hollow?) self, which occured during the fight with Zaraki. Again, this sequence took place inside of Ichigo's inner world. If you want to count it as a third, the next test was to acquire Zangetsu's bankai, and was brought about by Yoruichi. This occured right before Rukia was to be executed, and took place in a special training area of Yoruichi's.

Well, that depends on the definition of "Zangetsu". Technically speaking, Zangetsu is Zangetsu, regardless of whether or not Ichigo knows his name. So you can argue that the Zanpakutou Ichigo had at the beginning is still Zangetsu. If the sword itself is Zangetsu, then no matter what form it is in, it will still be Zangetsu.

Take, for example, a lump of clay. Say someone named it Bob. You mold the clay into the shape of a pot...then you find out its name is Bob. You later change it so that it's no longer in the shape of a pot, but in the shape of an ash tray. Its name is still Bob. No matter what form it is, the clay itself is still named Bob.

It might be a pointless argument on my behalf, but that's how I feel. Zangetsu was Zangetsu even before Ichigo learned his name. The question's vague nonetheless. It would've been better if it was clear they were asking about Zangetsu as just a Zanpakutou, or Zangetsu as "Shikai" form.
