Well since you brought up NK, for such a 'renegade province' to be controlled by China, Taiwan's focus should be the quality of life of its citizens in such a condition. NK is an absolute failure in that regard, and they're officially independent as well (even though they are just puppets politically). Amongst the nations and states on the planet that are being completely controlled by military giants, Taiwan is doing very well.

One of key polices of Kim's dynasty is independence (I forgot what's the korea word for it), which is a concept that's present in the politics of both Korea. While NK depends on the Chinese for aids, it is not a puppet. Chinese has some influence, but it does not manage NK in any ship or form, as you are making it sounds like. After the Korean war, the Chinese army was quickly kicked out. They pretend today that the war was mainly fought by the North Koreans. Thoughout 60s and 70s, the NK were better off than the Chinese, and even better than SK during certain period of time. They got the soviet aids. What's so good about NK having nukes for the Chinese? They have voted against Chinese bid for 2000 Beijing Olympics.

Looking through a few forums which doesn't ban users from arguing about who Taiwan belongs to, it does seem a little suspicious that China maybe hiring agents of influence to "ease" opinions about Taiwan being an independent state and undermine "China bashers" (who are actually people who had seriously bad experiences with China expatriates everytime). On the other end there are probably NATO agents writing about how China will take over Japan and SEA after getting Taiwan. Pretty much ball flashing by both sides.......as usual. Interesting that both these parties are more concerned about pushing their opinion to be right rather than taking care of their domestic economic issues.

I would have blanketed the area with the term "Pacific", but further East would be between Russia and US instead of US and China.
