girls like kikoru are into older guys because daddy issues of course, she may be a love rival but I'm sure nothing will come of it.

still, she has a lot of options too besides kafka.

I agree that Kikoru will surely see Kafka as a 2º father figure, that being said I also don't think (or want) that Kafka stays with Mina (they will only be friends and comrades, but not lovers.) Personally I would like Kafka to get a waifu similar to him (that is, she is a human-Kaiju hybrid), although now that I think about it this is not a romance series..., well there is no harm in talking about this XD.

I get the sense that Kikoru sees Kafka more like a father figure than a love interest. She has been lacking fatherly love and understanding, and here is Kafka, who is so welcoming and understanding. Not only that, he protects her and worries about her, unlike her dad. I just don't see Kikoru having romantic feelings for Kafka at the current point in the story.
Daddy issues translating into romantic interest isn't anything new, in RL or fiction.

Sure very likely. It's just at this point in the story, I feel it's more father figure than love interest. That can develop into love interest later, but not at this time.

It really goes to show how used to Kaiju attacks Japan is that they have such an effective and efficient response to a Kaiju attack, quickly evacuating civilians and getting as much artillery power in place to help the Defense Force against a mushroom Honju and it's Yonju children .

It's Kafka and his squads' first official Kaiju sortie! And Kafka is about to puke on Kikoru! keep it together, buddy .

The squad is all hyped up and ready to get going and kill Kaiju! And so is Kafka! Even if he's the only one who has to slowly crawl down a building .

Kikoru is still an exceptional and quick Kaiju killer, proof of why they need these new recruits, though her one weakness seems to be praised from Kafka Hibino .

Nakanoshima is a cougar! Better watch out Aoi and Izumo. I wouldn't mind though .

Kafka in human form isn't amazing at killing Kaiju compared to some of his squadmates, but he's the only one willing to get into the muck of a Kaiju corpse, slice into it, and discover intel they need to better be able to take them down and stop them from spreading. And that's valuable in and of itself .

Mina has a giant gun and amazing power, wiping out that Honju until it's just a melted pile of goo...but in her mind, she's showing "Kafka-kun" exactly how powerful she is so he knows how hard he has to work to be able to be by her side .

Hoshina is no slouch either. Mina carries the firepower, but Hoshina is more of the up close and personal type when it comes to slicing and dicing Kaiju. It runs in his family .

The Honju is dead and that just leaves the Yonju stragglers, and while the squad is exhausted, they're still raring to go and keep fighting, particularly prodigies like Kikoru and Ichikawa. So of course Ichikawa and Iharu run into the humanoid Kaiju .

It's definitelly good to have soeone with expertise right at the frontline, it helps avoid lot of very unsavory surprises.

Having seen the chapter, the first mission of the rookies, Kafka helped in his own way and Mina showed why she is a captain (she has high firepower, although in this chapter her tiger did not appear) and in the next chapter the talking Kaiju will appear I hope Kafka (in his Kaiju form) shines, let's wait for the next chapter!.

indeed, is really helpful to have someone like kafka in the front lines, it seems until now they never knew the fungus weakness and kafka in 1 minute not only found it but found too that they were reproducing. To be honest it makes the front line look pretty bad.

I like that they aren't overusing the kaiju form at every turn since it has the saitama power.

Look guys, isn't it funny to watch the MC climb down the building while everyone else jumps around like superheros? How hilarious, I can't contain my laughter...

Couldn't Kafka have gotten a grappling gun or something? They have high tech kaiju suits and high tech anti-kaiju weapons, but can't spare the time to make one grappling gun?

Did you guys know that the female characters are super mega extremely awesome? I guess not since the show needs to point it out at least twice an episode, apparently our underdeveloped brain can't retain that detail so we need to be reminded again how amazing Kikoru is.

So you are telling me that no one ever took a few minutes to properly study the kaiju corpses to find out the super basic stuff Kafka found out this episode? Do they even have a research team in charge of that stuff? You would think that a specialized government fighting force would, at the very least, be able to figure this stuff out quite easily, especially if these are just the basic run of the mill type of Kaiju, but hey, gotta make more convenient to make the MC look like he is doing something and not looking 100% pathetic.

You would think that figuring out how each type of Kaijus weaknesses might work before engaging or at least having a educated guess from years upon years of Kaiju research would be the most basic thing to have ready, but apparently in all that time they were easily able to make suits and weapons out of Kaiju materials but can't be bothered to learn about them enough to easily find where their cores might be place depending on their type.

I honestly hope that the story gets over the whole keeping the kaiju abilities a secret sooner rather than later, stuff like that starts to get frustrating and annoying really fast in these types of stories, I get that the writer wants to show him earning this by his own strengths and efforts, but the fact that the series not only kneecaps him at every turn by putting him in a pathetic spotlight, it also bends over backwards so that he can shine through the one thing he is allowed to have (look above), while at the same time gifting him a super power (those of apparently the strongest Kaiju ever recorded so far) makes it difficult for me to take any of this seriously, especially root for the MC when he could just use his secret powers and easily surpass everyone.

I know that I am complaining a lot (I won't apologize for it) and that's because I want to like the show, but it's difficult to not notice the obvious inconsistencies that keep popping up that hold it back from being better and more entertaining, I am ok with beginning set up, but that has to start paying off sooner rather than later.

I mean, I actually find it amusing that everyone gets Superhero powers while Kafka has to be like a regular dude. It makes the contrast with him as Kaiju No. 8 more palpable .

I kind of doubt they'd have grappling hooks just because the only reason Kafka would need one is his physiology can't bring out the power in the suit that everyone else has. It would literally just be for him.

I mean, this seemed pretty reasonable what with showing Mina in action again (and deliberately flexing for Kafka's sake) and even showing how far Kikoru has to go. They also showed how skilled Hoshina is and how much potential Ichikawa has.

I think the Kaiju are deliberately being modified so ordinarily the Yonju wouldn't have those cores placed like that or spread but Kafka found it out because he dug deep in a way that would only be expected from the clean-up crew because normal Defense Force members just prioritize killing the Kaiju as efficiently as possible.

Maybe it's because I watch Ultraman but I feel like the appeal is that contrast between what he does of value as a human (which he's slowly developing the more he's out in the field) with his more larger scale fights in his alter ego and trying to maintain that balance and not let anyone find out. And, at least to me, the way they handled it in this episode felt sensible with what we've seen up to this point.

Well, at least now they have so,e real reason for keeping Kafka around other than "he's amusing to watch". Getting new info on the kaijus in real time is valuable and can be worth having to deal with a potential dead weight.
At this point, I don't think Kafka's secret is going to be revealed anytime soon, so the author can keep using him as both the hero and comic relief. I'd even say that maybe one of the reasons Kikoru was made so amazing is because she'll be the one that will get the credits for his achievements (and if this episode is of any indication, Genos...I mean, Ichikawa will join too) and she needs to be talented for that to be believable.
Anyway, the humanoid kaiju is around this time too so I guess it will soon the turn for Kaiju n.8 to shine, possibly without another recruit learning his secret.
I was complaining about Mina not being developed and now we got the first step in the right direction.

I'm glad that Kafka is finding ways to take action. Because up to this point it's been more of a "just hire him for a support role in the base" sort of thing. His insights in the test were ones that could be leveraged from a safer location. But this episode gave him more real reasons to be out there. Someone that can actively break down the kaiju and figure out their quirks mid-battle has use.

Though he is only ever going to reach his goal if his secret is revealed. Not going to get strong enough in his human form to stand at the top.

They're broadcasting things very loudly with lines akin to 'it would take someone really super awesome and very very strong to stand by her.'

I think in order for him to reveal himself to more people, the threat will have to be great enough. That seems to be what the enemy kaiju humanoid is setting up, narratively.
