Do the novels ever explain well why Araragi chose Senjougahara over Hanekawa? For some reason Araragi negates having feelings for Hanekawa in the prequel novels like if he only had a hero complex but Kizumonogatari gave them so much focus. Was it just puberty or something? There are a lot of reasons, but one of the most important ones is that Hitagi is simply a better fit for him because she grounds him in normal human life in a way that Hanekawa simply couldn't have done. Araragi needs someone to hold him back otherwise he would completely drown himself in his ideals.
There's also the fact that he puts Hanekawa on an insane pedestal, I don't think he could even imagine having a relationship with someone he thinks of in that way.
