The expectation is different to begin with.

You can see from Wing and SEED that decision of 'bunch of AUs' is better in sense of expanding mecha catalogue and audience.
If you stick with one era for long time, you're bound to follow mecha design limitation and atmosphere set by the initial series as you can see from Unicorn list of enemies. There will be no unrealistic Wing Zero and Deathscythe Custom, gritty Barbatos, physically fit minimalist Celestial Being, martial artists like God and Build Burning or great homage like Tryon 3; no Heero, Setsuna, Sei, Meijin and Sekai because every MC should be following Amuro and Char footsteps and their era tense, depressing atmosphere.

If that era is well-received and there's interest to see more of world-building and mecha catalogue, spin-off it is.
I don't see this model as bad because not only it solved sales (the most important aspect) but also allowing the team to tackle various theme without ruining what OG told. Leaving the issue only to "can we got good writers for it?" for the spin-off LOL.

Its not like this kind of decision have no challenge, pushing idea to make it unique in comparison to past series (AU) is a notable hurdle I didn't want to claim creative direction is doing terrible job.
