Well, it doesn't help that the TV anime of Slayers is rather on the silly side and Lina herself is obviously still quite young. The original novels are a lot more serious. I think Lupin does fit the intended brief a lot better.
PS I was surprised to find out recently that the author has started writing the Slayers LNs again after an 18 year gap.
