To be fair, the original novel followed the
Beltorchika's Children timeline where Hathaway was a lot better character there. Intead of killing the innocent Chan thanks to his libido talking, he killed Quess and ended her terror in the Alpha Azieru. That made the ending of the novel a lot more tragic.
