That's "common" enough. One of the most infamous case was Anno after Evangelion, and it wasn't just letters: Gainax had graffiti at its entrance so yeah.
Meanwhile,
authorities have found 2 barrels of 20L of Gasoline, 6 kitchen knives and a hammer at the studio first floor. I have no idea what he was thinking, but there is no doubt he was about to do a massacre.
On a side note, just in case, I suggest not donating any money right now, even Sentai Filmworks's campaign. KyoAni is a private company, not part of Japan's state. As such, a sudden flow of money isn't something they can handle without care and they potentially can get accounting troubles because of that. So it is best to wait for an official announcement.
