There was a massive rocky outcrop, roughly twice the height of the surrounding trees, with a tunnel that led into the center of it. The cavern that they reached was open to the sky above them, however my guesstimate on how things looked was that the opening was roughly the size of the patch of land that Naofumi protected everyone in (so 12-35 ft/3-10 m, depending on perspective).

Given that the overall size of the blast that hit Naofumi was roughly 10x the size of the area he protected, the blast that will have hit the outcropping will have the vast majority of the energy absorbed by the outcropping itself, with only a small portion of it pouring through the opening. As such, as long as Ren and Itsuki and their teams can get back into the tunnel, and maybe get some magical shielding up, they're moderately likely to survive.

The greatest risk for them would be if the tunnel itself collapsed, trapping them inside the cavern area, which is likely to be lava-fied from the attack. A large portion of the outcrop is likely to have been vaporized in the attack. It's entirely believable that the attack could have killed them (thus the Pope's confidence that they did so), but it's also entirely believable that they'd be shielded enough to survive (but only due to Itsuki noticing the threat, and giving them a chance to take cover), even if it took them some time to dig themselves out.
