I've tried all the same strategies as you but have given up. The VLC for Android beta has Chromecast support, but it crashes all the time for me. I've tried casting the screen while running MXPlayer, but the display is slow and stutters, as is always the case with streaming media. (Stream comes to phone where it's rendered to the Chromecast format then sent to the TV. Apps with native Chromecast support send the stream directly to the dongle with the phone only used for control.) Don't seem to have any audio either.
I doubt MXPlayer will ever have Chromecast support. It's been the number one request for years but never implemented..
Maybe a Raspberry Pi mounting the remote shares over NFS?
