It's funny how just this morning after watching the first two episodes last night I got an email from my local paper on 18 travel destinations to check out in 2018. Antarctica was on the top of the list. It had direct links to two companies that do expedition cruises. National Geographic, and Silversea. A one person trip is going to run you at least 10K USD. So yeah, while pricey it's still possible for civilians/tourist to go.
But for the type of trip Shirase wants to do, like you mentioned that's another matter.
