It would be a nice subversion if Rem turned out the to be the main real heroine wouldn't it? And considering that Re:Zero has enjoy subverting the hell out of 'certain hero in other world' tropes already, it not to far out there either.
Through in honesty, I think the writer just trying to set up a love triangle for jealousy conflict latter down. Emilia certainly sharp enough that she catch onto Rems feelings for Subaru sooner or latter, and then his misery will take on whole new form!
