Pretty much what I've seen saying for weeks. The Macross Extra (was it the name? that tie in prequel manga) also introduces a very ominous group experimenting with Vajra and Var... just as Windermere are busy with their independence scuffle.
Var isn't just limited to that zone, but it's spread across the galaxy. Such a timing!
