Heavy metal clouds are supposed to mitigate the effect of Laser-class BETA. Basiscaly it's a cloud of heavy metal particles, so the lasers have to burn through to get to you, and the hope is that it weakens the laser beam enough that hits are more survivable.
As for Yui's squadronmates, the smoke that Zuikashits are carrying isn't really that great and isn't as effective as a proper bombardment of 155mm heavy metal shells. It's the difference between smoke grenades and artillery smoke rounds.
