Aliens are actually a more reasonable explanation compared to "Secret organization or the government ninja kidnapping hundreds of thousands of players to strap them to VR machines because REASONS". Magic is out of the question seeing how a very vocal part of the readers and anime watchers are very opinionated against MAGIC.
