There's "save points" that seemingly randomly occur. It's theorized later why points are chosen, but I won't go into it. The respawn point after dying updates here and there and Subaru jokes around that old men in the world act as save points, since his first few save points are always around them.

And the main heroine is a half-elf, yes.
