He was removing the ranged support, to allow him more freedom to fight the melee-specialist without interference. It is a perfectly functional strategy. In fact, ignoring the kids completely and just blowing through the door and killing his target and then escaping would
also have been a perfectly functional strategy, and just as much a sign of a professional.
