It's a mix of both, and this isn't a new trend. Even during the Cold War, there were attempts at multirole aircraft, and at this point only the US and Russia still maintain dedicated air superiority fighters (F-15A/B/C/D, Su-27 family, F-22, PAK-FA). Every other nation has gone the multirole route since the late 80s because of logistics and doctrine - if you can only have 100 planes, they'd better do as much as possible. Note F-15E and F-15I, the later blocks of the F-16, the Rafale, Mirage 2000, Typhoon, etc.
