I can't help you with the hardware issue, but I will recommend
MX Player as the software solution. It plays pretty much everything I've thrown at it including H.264, ASS-softsubbed series in the Matroska container. Give it a try on your phone. I use it on my Samsung Galaxy S3.
I can't recall if I tried it with a 10-bit encode. I'll give it a try and post back.
