I know we don't have a lot of information to go on just yet, but Akihiko in his picture sort of looked like a doctor or scientist judging from the lab coat, so I'm guessing that some sort of experiment is being preformed through these actions. What exactly that would be though I'm not sure. Something psychological perhaps?

Kayaba Akihiko himself said that he created SAO purely for his own entertainment. He also said that he already accomplished what he want by creating SAO so.. I guess that's it, unless there's something more deeper than what ep1 says/implies.

If there really is more, well, who knows? We'll just have to wait if ever. Episode 1 really hasn't enough info about Kayaba.
