He didn't have many choices to begin with and any other course of action would screw Sasuke even further from an earlier age. Give the guy a break huh...he had to kill his whole family while coming up with a way to give his brother a better life than he had.

Yeah and out of those two choices he made the 3rd one : repeatedly beat and torture his little brother, driving him insane with grief by forcing him to experience over and over the murder of his parents, telling him to kill his best friend and filling with so much hate that virtually nothing else remained inside him. All out of love of course.
Sasuke has become an enraged dog that should be put down for the safety of the rest of the world but Itachi is entirely responsible for that.
