Zeref himself acts grandiose in the sense that it's "His job" to cleanse all the evil in the world.

In most cases, people assume fairly easily that the power of death = Evil.
Zeref himself said, "that this age has come to an end".

Also, you need to consider zeref has two sides.
The base and the awakened. Both could harness magic, but his awakened form shows killing intent.

Either way, it sounds as tho zeref is totally berserk and can easily be a loose cannon.
