That's the problem. If you've never read Hathaway's Flash, you basically have no idea why Tomino even included him in the movie (aside from being Noah's son and all)

After losing Quess, Hathaway basically goes bonkers, joins an anti-Earth "terrorist" force calling himself by a pseudonym and steals the prototype Xi Gundam from Earth (not unlike the actions of "Quattro" and the AEUG in the beginning of Z Gundam), and forms a archrivalry with an Earth pilot in another Gundam until he's eventually captured and ordered executed by his own father.

On an related note, I have no idea what the mech designer was smoking when he came up with Xi Gundam and Gundam Penelope, but I think I want some.
