NASA has stated that they are going to focus on things outside Earth orbit. Earth and near Earth (aside from maybe the Moon) will be up to the other countries and private industry to play around with. NASA is going outwards with their projects. Assuming they get the funding that is. (The stated goal of the Orion now is near Earth asteriods and Mars...with the chance of the Moon, if they need to go back there again. Also capable of docking with the station, but that's not one of their missions anymore.)

I however would like an idea to use the ISS as a construction platform to build a bigger station...since it has that large truss and multiple robotic arms. If the Shuttle can be used as a work platform with just one arm and cargo bay, the Station can be a larger one.
