The Demon is supposed to save him from the curse of Alpha Stigma. Alpha Stigma's true form is the solver of all equations, one of the Rule Fragments.

Gotta love it when he activated it and the damage it dealt.

Spoiler for Damage and cost:

Wiped out the one fucking million Gastarkians with one blast, but at the cost of a sacrifice of a dear one to him for every single activation. He used it to save Ferris =P and sacrificed his mom. Fully awakened Ryner is tied with Refal, who holds another Rule Fragmen that requires him to sacrifice a part of his body to use and only his family's lineage could use it. Upon activation can wipe out around 800k people at once.

Ryner is totally badass. Damn it, I wish I have time to keep reading instead of reading random pieces here and there.
