Macross - Mecha, Weapons, and Technology
As the title suggests, the purpose of this thread is to discuss the Macross Mecha, Weapons, and Technology :)

Let me start this thread off with that most iconic of Macross Mecha - the venerable VF-1.
From the Macross Mecha Manual: Quote:
In SDF Macross, the entire air/space wing of the SDF-1 pilot the different variants of the VF-1. These variants (aside from the Armored and FAST pack-enabled ones) are just about identical to the basic model with the exception of the number of head lasers, so the quality of equipment barely matters in the greater scheme of things. It proved so successful and iconic that the name went on to become the common nickname for all subsequent variable fighters. In fact, they are much more likely to be called "Valkyries" than their official designations are used. From an outside-the-universe perspective, it's fairly obvious that the design of the Valkyrie is based on the F-14 Tomcat. Likewise, much of the specifications and other details are drawn up in a manner similar to real combat aircraft. Furthermore, the "VF" designation is also used for US Navy air group squadrons. In particular, at the time that SDF Macross aired, the VF-84 squadron, the "Jolly Rogers", flew F-14s and used the same skull and crossbones insignia that adorned Skull Squadron. Fact that only I'm likely to care about: the design of the VF-1 was used by Fasa's Battletech game as the basis of no fewer than four Battlemechs: the Wasp, the Stinger, the Phoenix Hawk (Phoenix being the name of the F-14's signature missile), and the Valkyrie! ... and, as dahak pointed out, the Crusader makes it five. |
Talking about Mecha, can anyone guess what models are these?
I know one is a Vf-25, but the other? is it a VF121 Ghost? I'm not sure. it looks strange. Click the image for a bigger picture. http://img247.imageshack.us/img247/5...rossse9.th.jpg |

wasnt the Glaug in macross used by fasa to create the Marauder IIC assault mech?
|
SMS's Skull Squadron:
Ozma: VF-25(?) can equip with Armored Pack (ep1) or Super Pack (ep2) Alto: VF-25(?) will fly Gilliam's and can equp with Super Pack (ep1) Michael: VF-25(?) his model is equipped with a long range weapon (ep2) Luca: VF-25(?) his model is equipped with the Elintseeker style radome (ep2) |

Thankfully Lucas Arts saved us from the term Droidwarrior. http://brianscache.com/unseen/ has a list of everything that FASA removed due to the legal complications. |
I would suspect new weapon development some where down the line considering the current set of ballistic and missile weapons don't seem to have enough power to destroy those "giant red bugs"

And also the body part between the forward cannard and the wings is similar to yf-19 no? see the third picture of this link (the first colored yf-19 in fighter mode): http://www.steelfalcon.com/Macross/yf19.shtml |

http://www.new-un-spacy.com/macross7...9a-fighter.gif The fighter in the OP is quite a bit different from it, so I presume that it's an entirely new model that we'll see much more of in the coming episodes. Quote:

Here's a thought on the mystery ship, it's another prototype competing with the VF-25 for main production adoption ala macross plus :P
Kinda makes sense since the VF-25 is deployed for performance testing in combat. If i'm the competing manufacturer I'd want combat test data on my fighter as well |
yeah, i've noticed that the fighter in that picture, has forward carnnard, and the wings are far too different to make it a VF-25 even in armoured packs.
Can't be a VF-171 as well. yeah, it might be a VF-22 or at leased a variant of a VF-22 |

So you guys think as I do that the mystery would be rival of Alto is a girl? |
http://img247.imageshack.us/img247/5...rossse9.th.jpg
You know what? I completely forgot about the VF-4 Lightning III. look at it: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...B2012_VF4a.jpg It could be derivative, if not spiritual successor based on the VF-4. Just look, forward cannards leg engines off-centred spaced on the wings. |
Nice, I was poking around Mahq.net and found some sketches of the VA-14
http://www.mahq.net/mecha/macross/ma...14-fighter.jpg http://www.mahq.net/mecha/macross/macross7/va-14.htm http://www.new-un-spacy.com/macross7...us-fighter.gif more info http://www.new-un-spacy.com/macross7/vf-14-m7plus.htm also designed by General Galaxy :D they seems to like to work of a modified delta wing But yeah i agree the pilot will be that girl shown in conjunction with the plane. |

looks more closer to this then mine. but no cannards......well....delta wing do need them sometimes..... |
So we get a small bit of Tech update in ep 3.
The humans do have weapons that can take out a Red's armor, specifically the "secondary" fire on the Michel's sniper rifle. In atmosphere said rifle fires what looks like conventional rounds that can damage a "small" Varja though not pierce completely through it. Space operations allows it to fire a "highly charged" shot that can completely penetrate the Red's armor. On the shot being "highly charged", evidence: the wound after the Red's head gets blown off appears to be cauterized . Which leads us to another tech update on the "Red's" themselves. I'm still sticking with the Red's being alive themselves and not piloted suits. Why? Mostly if it was piloted I would think we would have had a least a rumor after Ozma killed the 1st one. The Red's appear to be able to operate even when the head is removed. This may indicate the central nervous control is not located in the head but else where in the body, possibly in the more armored torso. Ozma's confirmed killed seems to indicate that the "death" was more do to "fluid" loss rather than destruction of a central nervous hub. |
It's a bug.
Have you seen a bug decapicated and still move? A bug's nervous system is much more distributed. Probably that's why boys at DARPA are experimenting adding circuitry essentially creating biomechanical robots. |
that might be an entire new model. Looks like a VA 14 variation though.
Those wings are not close to being conventional. If i have to draw a chord line to measure sweep angle.. i have to say it's in no way forward swept like that VF 19's. |
