One Piece - Chapter 1102 [manga]
Welcome to the weekly manga discussion thread for One Piece.
Thread GuidelineBriefs
Happy holidays, everyone! Credit goes to AP's Redon and co. for info: -Chapter title is "The Life of Kuma". Splash features Bonney. -Speaking of Bonney, the chapter begins with her crew searching for Kuma. They just barely miss him, as the warlord decides to distance himself from his daughter. Meanwhile, Bonney gains notoriety by thrashing the marines and using her DF power on them. Around this time, Luffy also gains infamy as he got his first bounty after defeating Arlong.... -Later, after the Enies Lobby incident took place, Kuma reveals to Vegapunk that Luffy is Dragon's son! Afterwards, we cut to a familiar scene.... the Thriller Bark incident. Kuma watched the Straw-Hats battle Moria, but soon after the dust settled on that situation, the government orders him to prepare for war with Whitebeard. Shortly after that, we cut to Sabaody, where he's watching Bonney from afar before he catches wind of Luffy beating up the Celestial Dragon. We then reach the moment where he vanishes Luffy's crew, but from his POV. As the rubber man laments the fact that he couldn't protect his crew, Kuma silently disagrees with him..... it's just that they aren't prepared for the New World yet. He's confident that Luffy may save the world one day, so he wants to make sure the young pirate is ready for when that time comes. -Back in Egghead, Saturn orders Vegapunk to install a self-destruct device in Kuma as a precautionary measure. Vegapunk tries to negotiate a compromise that will allow the warlord to keep his mind, but Saturn will hear none of it.... he wants that mind gone. And so, we finally jump to the last day of Kuma's "normal" life.... the eve of the Paramount War. As Vegapunk programs him to face the Whitebeard pirates, he requests to have another directive added: To protect the Thousand Sunny. When the scientist asks him why he has so much faith in Luffy, he answers that he's aware that the tale of Nika is just a legend.... but he promised his daughter that she would be freed one day by a warrior of liberation! Having been moved by Luffy's actions, he believes that the man will change the world one day. He then proceeds to extract his memories with his paw powers (which doesn't erase his own memories, but instead creates a copy), and Vegapunk has them preserved in a special container, since touching the cloud of thought will make them vanish. Kuma's life flashes before his eyes during the process, and just as his mind is about to be erased, he makes one final request of the doctor.... -Back to the present. We see that Kuma's memories have vanished, since Bonney touched them. We then learn Kuma's final message to his daughter: "Happy tenth birthday, Bonney"....... -Just a quick reminder: While TECHNICALLY there's suposed to be a break next week, the holiday chapters tend to leak super early around this time of year, so we may be seeing the 1103 thread by this time next week. Stay tuned and see! ;) Dynamic tag cannot be rendered. (PrintableThread) Dynamic tag cannot be rendered. Given the spoilers for the chapter, we will have Kuma's point of view until he loses his humanity, and although I would have liked them to explain why the Buccaneer race is so special, in general it was a good flashback, let's wait for the full chapter.

So, what were people saying about how Kuma will get his free will and personality back by putting the memories back inside him?
|
Kuma is gone, gone forever :(
|
Yet another tearjerker on our hands.... Kuma may very well have been Luffy's greatest supporter. :( Now I'm seriously wondering if this is leading towards Bonney becoming a Straw-Hat? Perhaps that depends on whether or not the rest of her original crew survived....
Also, something rather curious about Oda's message from Jump Festa: It kinda seems like he implied the possibility of skipping Elbaf...... which would be a HUGE mistake, IMO. I get that he wants to reach the end sooner rather than later, but don't do it at the expense of islands with major potential for juicy plot, much less one that had so many years of buildup! :uhoh: But then again, maybe he's implying a different island the crew could stop at on their way to Elbaf...... Hachinosu, perhaps? Hmmm..... |

Here’s hoping that in the next chapter old man Saturn will be squashed by Gear 5 Luffy like the cow headed spider he is.

Defeating Five Elders is a huge feat, and can drop the WG's morale further. |
Man... that was sad, kuma was a hero. Wishful thinking here but I hope bonnie joins the straw hats.

The justification might be for her to want to take down the Elders. |
I really forgot that Kuma guarding Sunny during the time skip. What a GOAT. Dragon also has gathered great mates just like Luffy did.
