Now I have to decide if Miyu Irino in a rare lead role is enough to get me to watch a LN fantasy.

They're novels, not light novels.

Spoiler for ep1:
|
This show's first two episodes were my favourite of any new show this season.
|
I had high expectations but they were definitely met. Apart from too much talky exposition in the first episode that was pretty great.
|
Dang, this is good, but most anime these days have an IQ of 1 digit and its hard switching my brain into "care about the anime content and need to think a bit" mode
|
This show does suffer from telling instead of showing but besides that the first two episodes were excellent, definitely best series of the season.

The viewers of Japanese historical drama or historical manga are not understand the court relationship. Otherwise, the story is rather confusing. The royal court or harem is more or less mirroring ancient Japan's politics. The local lords gained the power to rule Japan, by marrying their daughters to the ruling monarch. The family feuds of Japan's royal court might become civil wars. The princes or lords who lost power have to become monks or exiled far away from the court.
The world view of gold raven/crew is bit confusing. Reading Wikipedia article on mythology still doesn't answer much of the confusion. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Three-legged_crow The characterization is easier to understand. The daughter of the eastern lord is a simpleton. It is more or less her limited contact with people outside her family. In contrast, two daughters of other houses are rather rude and ambitious. Then, the daughter of the fourth house is rather indifferent. She is there just to make up the number. Maybe they can play mahjong. |
I call BS on real Kinu causing drought and whatever other negative shit that was mentioned in this episode. It would not surprise me that Yatagarasu took on the title of Kinu after the first Kinu passed away to claim the authority of a divine being.

Okay, I'm confused about who can transform and who can't in this world. At first I thought only the elite nobility could transform, but then there was that bit about "horses" being people who have entered into indentured servitude and had their transforming power bound. So then I thought maybe everyone could transform, but that would conflict with the rule that people aren't supposed to transform in front of the women. Can't the women transform too? Or is transforming a male-only thing?

That aside, this ep was fantastic. For me this is the clear best show of the season, as good as Kuroshitsuji has been. |
