The Sendai branch of the Kikuya Shoten bookstore chain posted an image of Ken Kawasaki and Yū Furusawa's 44th Oi! Tonbo (Hey! Tonbo) manga volume on Friday. According to the wraparound jacket band on the image, an anime adaptation of the manga has been green-lit for 2024. The volume will ship on Monday.

The story begins with Igarashi, who was disqualified as a pro golfer after a certain "incident" and thus moves to Kagoshima Prefecture's Tokara Islands to step out of the limelight. On these islands known as "Japan's last unexplored wilderness," he encounters a naive girl named Tonbo.

As it turns out, these supposedly unexplored islands have a homemade golf course, where Tonbo plays every day. She demonstrates genius-level prowess, playing every kind of shot with just one golf club, a 3-iron. Igarashi is amazed at Tonbo's talent, even as he harbors doubts about her only using a 3-iron. Yet, hidden deep in Tonbo's heart lies a painful, sad past ….

At last - a golf anime!

Frontier 2023-04-29 10:28

I don't know why, but this gives me an "old school" vibe.

That was my favorite premiere of the season so far. Very fun and charming, and pretty golf accurate.

I like the girl. Full of energy and enthusiasm. Such a shame there's no one her age group on the island but at least there are other kids to play with. Now that "Igaiga" has arrived, we can watch her grow up and develop her golf game under a former pro. This ain't no Birdie Wing Golf Girl Story but it's a wholesome anime in the same kind of space (girls sports). Will follow for sure.

I'm guessing that everyone calling the golf pro "Igaiga" is some kind of pun in Japanese. Can anyone elaborate on it?

Guardian Enzo 2024-04-07 18:41

If it is I've never heard it. I assumed it was just playing off his name being hard for Ooi toi pronounce.

Alchemist007 2024-04-07 23:58

You think this is an ad about the country, golf, or the cute girl, but it's an anti-ad for kanji because even they can't read their own fellows names.

But yeah, Barakamon golf.

Guardian Enzo 2024-04-27 07:19

Not that I expected anybody to be talking about this show, but it's really good.

Tonbo being 15 is the biggest twist of the season, she looks and acts like she's 12 or something.

As I noted in my review.:heh: I would never have guessed that (maybe I'd have said 13).

Probably because Tonbo lives on the island her entire life so she acts younger compared to those who lives in the city.

Yes overall very old school vibe, you will probably see anime in the 90s with similar premises - captain tsubasa starts with similar premises - Roberto being down and see the talent of Tsubasa is the start of the Captain Tsubasa. Obviously the focus of Oi Tonbo is different.

It becomes a breathe of fresh air after all the recent ones who twist and turn for the sake of having twist and turns.

Producer of this anime talks a bit on why he created this anime. Perhaps unsurprisingly he's a massive golf fan.

I figured this would be a passion project of sorts, considering the age of the source.
