Entertainment magazine Variety reported on Tuesday that Netflix is collaborating with the manga creator group CLAMP (X, Cardcaptor Sakura) to produce an original anime series based on Grimm's Fairy Tales. Wit Studio is in charge of animation production for the series.

The title for the anime project is yet to be announced. Michiko Yokote (Bleach, Gintama, xxxHOLiC) is the scriptwriter.

That could be really good.

Clamp and WIT Studios seems like a great combination :).

Two words: Blood-C. :p

Sure, that was the parent company, not the subdivision Wit. But anything Clamp and original anime still has to clear the hurdle of skepticism that stinker raises. Fortunately with Yokote involved maybe Clamp is just contributing beanpole character designs.

To me, this just sounds like a Western-stories version of xxxHolic

How will the Seven Dwarves look like with CLAMP's character designs? :eyebrow:

6-episode antology will air on April 17th on Netflix (apparently, it is the "first season", though, some sources removed the mention of it):

CLAMP designs + WIT + Twisted takes on Grimm Fairy Tales = Cool .

Watched the first ep, the "Cinderella" variation. Interesting - a bit cliched but entertaining. My favorite part was the way they wove passages from "The Magic Flute" into the soundtrack, including some odd jazzy remixes.

The first episode was pretty interesting.
Spoiler for ep 1:

It did feel like classic CLAMP's style though, for sure. Hope the rest of the eps are as good as the first one.

Watched the first two episodes so far. I founbd it really odd that so many people found the plot of both episodes confusing (especially the second one). Like it was pretty clear and strtaightforward for me. Most of the twists were also quite predictable (I only got surprised that
Spoiler for ep. 1 plot:
).

Also, I got that blood and gore may be disturbing for some but people are being overly sensetive about it in fiction. I personally found both stories being pretty good interpretations of known plots. They stay true to the general story but give it an interesting twist both times. Lets see how the remaining ones will be.

Talking about soundrack, second episode had the famous intro from "Solveig's Song" woven into the music playing during one of the scenes (I cannot call myself a big classic music fan, but this one was also used in a few metal songs).

I liked Cinderella but I thought the Little Red Riding Hood ep was trite, predictable and boring guro porn.

This is pretty much how I feel about the first 2 eps as well. After the first episode, which kind of blindsided me, I can see that the show will subvert the plot of well-known stories, so in a broad sense, things will be a bit predictable. As long as they're competently written, they should still come off enjoyable for me.

One of the things I found amusing was the fact that they used Hisoka + Killua VA and how there were components of their personality traits in the episode's main characters(or not, but that's how I choose to view it =03). Also I don't usually get to see such unrelenting torture in graphic detail, so it is a bit of a welcome departure from only receiving an implicit version of those same events. Certainly not something I'd want to see everyday though =0v.

Finished it I liked Cindarella, Hans and Gretel and Piper of Hamelin the best. Weakest was probably the Bremen one. Didn't care much for Little Red Riding Hood although I had to laugh at
Spoiler for Little Red Riding Hood:

Nachtwandler 2024-04-23 12:22

Big Bad Wolf and Red Riding Hood are voiced by VAs of Killua and Hisoka apparently. :)

Kanon 2024-04-23 12:24

Finished watching it. Like a lot of anthology series, this was a real mixed bag.

I thought the first episode was very promising and a good re-imagining. Stuck close to the original but put a nice spin on it. Most of the others took the concept too far and almost twisted the stories beyond recognition. I'd say the first and the last one were the best, though the last one got real weird at the end.

Animation and character designs were really good. Are Clamp finally over their noodle people phase?

Nachtwandler 2024-04-23 12:36

I only watched half of the stories so far. Will put my full impresion oncve I finish.

Nachtwandler 2024-04-26 14:47

OK, so I finished it today.

"Cinderella" was probably the most consistent one. They took the story, changed the setting and added the twist. It was not to straightfiorward and interesting.

"Little Red Rifing Hood" and "Town Musicians of Bremen" were just simple and straigtforward. They took the general story and turned it into cyberpunk slasher in the first case and cyberpunk western in the second. Nothing deep, just straightforward story.

"Hansel and Gretel" was interesting. I though we'll get a play on Yakusoku Neverland but we got a straight up sci-fi instead with a few unpredictable twists. It was good but a bit slow for my taste.

"Elves and Shoumaker" was the most confusing one. Though, I got plasuible explanation from one guy in Internet (about the whole "elf" girl thing and stories N. was not sure if he wrote being result of his alcohol abuse). But it was at least interesting.

"Pied Piper of Hamelin" would have been great if not the final twist. I really hoped for more realistic solution in vein of the first story (damn, even the 4th one has pretty mundane explanation).
