So from what I can gather, this is essentially both a remake and a sequel at the same time. They seem to be using a more vn accurate retelling of the series as a framing device for a new story that possibly elaborates on things only hinted at in Umineko. Very interested in where this is going but I do worry about how all this comes across to newcomers.

That would be too unfair IMHO. She's in a position of authority and power. Rika's only advantage is knowledge of the underlying events and perps. If you give the perp the same memories then you make Rika's struggle all but impossible.

I still think it's more likely that the perp is different.

I don't yet understand the meaning of Rika & Hanyu dialogue in episode 2.

Does it mean that Matsuribayashi was not the miraculous, one in a billion, happy ending fragment that it was purported to be? That something in the game was still unresolved, so she has to keep looking?

Or perhaps that was the best one, but some witch is such a jerk that she sent Rika back anyway after her eventual death, and now she has to settle for some inferior ending where some people are sacrificed...?

That, but she doesn't necessarily has to settle for an inferior ending.

I think only half of the anime will retread the events of June 1983, and the real plot will be about saving Rika from her death as a teenager.

I guess...

It's just that Rika didn't get that good ending just by doing the right things, but by persistence and finally just luck, with a bit of divine intervention. It was supposed to be a one of a kind, miraculous fragment, the discovery of which gave Bernkastel her witch titles. If the same progression of events can be retreaded in another fragment, that seems like a pretty big retcon.

But maybe not. Still don't have much information.

She doesn't have Hanyuu with her this time, so it won't be the same.
