Macross Delta the Movie 2: Absolute LIVE!!!!!! Discussion Thread

There's another movie coming.

Matts 2018-09-23 10:22

Yeah this pretty much confirms that the 2018 project was the first film and the 2019 project for now is just milking Delta, after the Frontier anniversary. Unless they add Sheryl or Ranka into it. Oh god please no.
Sometimes I hate being right. This is one of those times. I also have bad juju/theories on what will happen now, but I'll just shut up. Stay positive I say as I drown in a black hole...

magnuskn 2018-09-23 11:23

Come on, share the doom and gloom. :p

And, yeah, I hope Sheryl and Alto stay far away from Delta. Ranka can go hang out with Freya and Co. for all I care. ^^

Random14 2018-09-23 16:37

Would it be too much to hope for them to have a proper ending to Delta now with the new movie? Like Frontier's second movie was mostly completely new stuff. And I think the original plan for Delta was for one season and then a concluding movie (and the first movie already covered most of the series)?

Well, here's hoping, but I'm not holding my breath.

Dash_Hunter 2018-09-23 23:17

Yeah, for some time now I had the suspicion that the animated project was not a series but a movie or two and since Delta was very much still fresh in the mind of Japanese fans it was obvious they would continue with it.

After having watched the Delta movie I can say that it's better than the series as a whole, just because it takes the only good parts of the series, i.e. the first 13 episodes, condense it and then it just replace the mid-series battle for the final one, still not as good as Frontier obviously or other Macross movies but definitely not the worst Macross content there is.

Now the thing is that the movie finished the series storyline already with some little changes
Spoiler for Movie Spoilers:

The ending felt definite and this time with less plot holes or hanging storylines, so if anything the fact that they will have to come up with something completely new at least has piqued my interest a bit.

HirouKeimou 2018-09-24 03:53

Amazingly, I'm unbiased.

Two things are concerning me about this movie right now:
1) Will we be receiving answers to all the questions regarding Lady M? And when will this movie pick up? After all, the series concluded where this latest movie ended... so geopolitical stuff is coming, I guess?
2) What will be our enemy this time? Because Windermere is now entering peace talks so unless someone blows up their planet again or something, they're likely not the focus (in any form) of the movie. So it begs a question of who or what will be their enemy going forward?

Also, albeit smaller concern for this bit: The love triangle.
Basically it's been concluded as far as I could tell. I'm a little worried it'll be like SDF-1 to Macross 7, wherein Max and Millia divorced in order to build drama (let's not pretend they didn't belong together, okay?). And I'm not positive it'll be a good idea to split Hayate and Freyja for drama especially if it'll downplay Mirage's character again, or worse... ruin it. Unless Mirage will be gaining a love interest? Or vise versa...? It's a smaller concern but one I feel is odd for Macross; normally the love triangle is the last thing resolved so this does feel a bit weird... right?

Anyway, at least it doesn't come out on Blu-Ray till like 2020 so my wallet won't suffer like it did during the last movie ($80 for a recap movie is insane; next time I'll save my money and buy Banana Fish volumes).

devilo96 2018-09-24 07:32

Dammit they milking the delta again...oh god that series already beyond help...so just end it already and make a new frontier instead...i really miss sherly song or another new macross that really have triangle love with a good design chara
But if thery really bring back the triangle love and then mirage win the ship...then im gonna love the 2nd movie

charles883 2018-09-24 08:28

Will you stop obsess with Frontier already. If everyone like you, you wont have Frontier at all as Macross fan just want sequal of first cast as they want only Minmay.

Anyway Delta movie 2 is going to uncharted territory as it has completely original plot and story. Frontier movie 2 at least has 2nd half of Frontier series as basic frame work with main villain remain the same like Leon and Macross Galaxy conspirator. I wonder if they bring in corrupt NUNS officer from the series in the movie as one of the villain in the movie.

Here my wish list:

-Hayate has New VF(Kinda obvius)
- More love story between Frejya and Hayate as they become couple in movie 1
- More dogfight and space battle
- Draken 3 has new pack like full armored or other pack.
- Macross Elysion crazy ship battle maneuver
- More song
- More development in Aerial Knight and Windermere as movie 1 stop war early.(Love to see Frejya able to return home after war and introduce Hayate to her parents).
- Unlikely to happen but crossover with Macross 7, Frontier and 30.
-Good original plot.
- Lady M identity finally reveal

I wonder you guys Mirage should pilot in movie 2? I prefer her continue pilot Draken 3.

endlessabyss 2018-09-24 09:15

Great news! It finally feels like we are getting something that is a bit original from Delta.

Some of my wishlist:

(General for now)

- Hire staff with experience in scripting and composition
- More in-depth characterization, even if it is this late into the game especially the Walkure members, as the story progresses

I dare the filmmakers to make her pilot a Destroid and make it badass somehow. Or maybe go with the easier route and give Mirage a Quad. Like, maybe piloting Valkyrie is just not her thing :heh:.

It finished the storyline but it left a ton of hooks. For instance, the movie also mentions Lady M and how she stole genetic material from Windermire and created Mikumo with it but didn't even try to clarify who the heck is Lady M and why did she do all this. The sequel movie should address this.

I also feel this time Mikumo could use some more focus. She's the closest thing to an actual protoculture there is yet she barely got any focus in the show or the compilation movie. The new movie should put the focus on her and Lady M.

BetoJR 2018-09-24 12:27

Jesus. We'll probably never know who or what "Lady M" is.

Diluc 2018-09-25 02:39

Bah! I dont excited for new Delta when Keith is died.

El Rue 2018-09-25 16:58

Maybe expanding into the whole Idol group thing was but the 1st in the line-ups of mistakes if they were unable to give them all enough focus, importance or such, not to mention how one of Macross' main theme's from the beginning was handled very badly.

Nothing about the new info even sparks a tiny bit of interest or curiosity that might make me want to go check back to Delta.

...Actually, I can't even remember any of the VF designs, good or bad guys wise. Or even the music.

charles883 2018-09-26 08:17

I have sneaky suspicious that movie 2 feature more clone of star singer as possible villain. In the series Mikumo flashback shows there 3 other Star singer. Most likely villain clone other star singer and use them for their plan.

You clearly don’t realize a lot of us have been around for decades if not 1982 (there are people that old here) and we have been in the fandom and seen it go through the motions over it’s 35 year run. Clearly. Look, get where you might be coming from, a lot of people here like Frontier a lot, myself included. But that’s because the different stories within the franchise have left us with expectation.
I know plenty of people who like or hate one or the other. Many people I’ve seen since… post episode 13 of Delta who have really disliked this particular series.
Since Yot-chan likes to troll here, I’m gonna go to the finale thread of Delta on MacrossWorld and summarize the opinion a member’s opinion there, that many, myself included, agreed with. We were hoping Delta would pick up after 13, flashing out the characters and getting into the meat of the story. This never happened. Which is why Delta was a let down.
Say what you want about any of the Macross stories, they always delivered. The trifecta of space opera – giant robots – love triangle worked. Even with a non-resolution it made sense. Macross 7 is a kids show run by a person who is known for directing kids shows. And it works in that context. Delta does not.
Delta wanted to be the idol anime Macross. Problem is, Kawamori already made that series. It’s called AKB0048.

Oh god. This again.
Windermere was an isolated and primitive culture. The Nuns arriving shook them to the core. Roid’s entire purpose is to prove that the Wind were the supreme race. They were not. They were a failure. A race stronger than the Zentraedi, but wit ha 30+year lifespan and a medieval society. They joined the treaty to get tech and weapons. Grace used fold quartz to destroy Galia IV. The NUNS restricted the distribution of fold quartz. Gramia went against this because the only other thing we see, in Delta, that they can profit off of, is water and apples. Gramia started the war over selling the materials for weapons of mass destruction. Everything was their fault. Nuns made shitty moves, but the catalyst to every single one of those was Windermere + once Roid came into play, their superiority complex.
How is this hard to get? The Nuns were sketchy? Yeah. The wind are literal Space nazis. Roid put a planet into a collective coma
S’bout it. Have a good one and all.

Mikumo is already a clone. This is the most boring idea for a plot. No offense. I'd rather they go with the Big Bad Nuns plot. Even if they end up hypocritical.

:uhoh:

In their defense, none of charles883's post had anything about this at all. You basically restarted a bonfire from ashes. :heh:
And also, if the corrupt N.U.N.S. do feature in the new movie, do remember that in Frontier, the Vajra turned into a side threat while Galaxy was revealed a major villain and in the movies, the Vajra still remained in verse as an enemy while they could've simply trimmed the Vajra from the plot and focused on Galaxy. If anything, adding the Vajra only harmed the pacing sometimes... it's important to remember that, especially considering DYRL...

Well, charles883 sort of did --if not, started the conversation. From what gather was a simply a explanation/provided context on charles883's claim about the NUNS officer being corrupted from the TV series.

Anyways, back to the thread's topic...

- Enemy: Perhaps Lady M? And the Chao's organization? Who has a beef with the NUNS? Using the Winderemere for their own purpose? We haven't heard much from them, so I think this might be a good opportunity to introduce them as villains.
- Love triangle scenario and still with the Freyja and Hayate route: Hayate becomes more self-aware and there are actual interactions between three. Mirage and Freyja become close friends with each other. Out of concern of realizing that Freyja is withering away --the TV series and the first movie keeps mentioning Freyja's skin condition which seems like a good chance to create the whole drama-- and the deep relationship between Freyja and Hayate, Mirage confesses to Hayate to move on. Of course, she's rejected. This leaves Hayate, who also knows about the skin condition, and Freyja to have their final moments with each other.

Um. No. You and Matts obviously did not read charles883's post. He never said anything about requiring explanation on the reasons why the N.U.N.S officer was corrupt in the first place; he simply questioned if the person would pop up as an enemy or side threat in the next movie, which is likely...

This goes without saying but... don't insert words into other people's mouths. You and Matts read charles883's post wherein he mentioned the corrupt N.U.N.S officer as a potential enemy in the new movie as charles883 desiring an explanation for the guy as if not comprehending his motives in the TV series... and he never said anything like that in his post (I double-checked during typing my original post).

The Frontier bit of Matts post is a little justified on their part. However, while I do agree with charles883 a little because even as Matts argues SDF-1 and other entries in the franchise, they rarely ever bring those up in an argument outside of Frontier; it's still a justified argument of "hey, we've been around longer than you." The reply I'd give is "then bring those to the plate more often because it feels like you only compare Delta's flaws to that of Frontier."

But none of the post ever warranted Matts obvious agitation with charles883 because he never implied he needed an explanation of the plot revolving around said character.

This kind of goes back to my Frontier argument earlier about Galaxy and the Vajra...

Because while Chaos and Lady M could and should be the main focus of the new story, the likelihood is (at least based on the TV series story) N.U.N.S will be a big focus too if the bombing of Windermere and Hayate's dad still applies in movie verse, who knows if it will. It's possible it'll be a new enemy too, and we'll never know about Lady M.

It's a bit like Frontier's movies:
Me: "I'm so done with learning about the Vajra, I'm ready to focus on Galaxy."
Kawamori: "Nope. The Vajra will need screen time alongside the trio and also Galaxy."
Me: "So Galaxy is still gonna be the big villain who doesn't rear their ugly head till the 2nd movie and get hardly any time for you to really care about this transition?"
Kawamori: "Yep. Pretty much."

In short, it's happened before in Macross...

I'm not gonna comment on everything else because it's likely... but this bit is actually solved in the first movie. If you watched it subbed, they explain that destroying what Roid is hooked up to will slow down Windermere's aging issue. And in the finale moments where Hayate and Mirage flies over, you see a big portion of Freyja's crystallization fade off. (Heinz too.) So this has been somewhat solved in the movie.

Matts 2018-09-29 12:06

I have had HirouKeimou blocked for like a year since they don't argue in good faith. Nor are they interested in facts and I don't feel like feeding either the trolls or the fandom stans. Apparently they complained about my grammar, of all things. Wow. Way to prove my point. :D Also, complaining about grammar and/or phrasing on a forum like this one, of all places. Holy cow. Aaaaanyway.

Yup. I don't mind that some people liked Delta, but posting blatantly untrue crap and moving the goal posts (ie. "stop obsessing over Frontier") is where I feel like having someone chime in and correcting people on the timeline is fine. I have the entire series as proof.
If you have interviews, manga and other materials to add to support your argument, then do that. But also understand that a lot of people will not take that stuff into account. And here's why. Frontier got enough people hyped and questioning the subtext and the unanswered questions. Delta did not. The timeline paints the Wind as space nazis. No supplementary material will change this.
As a side note, a lot of people don't care about the Frontier supplementary stuff either. Just saying.
The problem Delta has is that it is an incredibly flat story with 1D characters. There is nothing to explain. Sure, if you really want to stretch it you can go back to the Wind manga and have the ariel knights angst as kids. Still doesn't change the fact that Wind started a war because the NUNS wanted them to stop supplying god knows who with material for weapons of mass destruction. The wind are space nazis. Sorry, boo.
