How to revive an aging SKS!!
The SKS rifle, a semi-automatic firearm designed and produced in 1946, this rifle was intended to replace the Mosin Nagant and the SVT-40 as the Russian infantry's front-line medium-range battle rifle. Unfortunately, the introduction of the AK-47 in Russia almost immediately superseded the SKS, and rendered the latter all but a forgotten relic in its nation of origin. Luckily, it was mass produced elsewhere, with some 15 million produced by countries such as China, Romania and Yugoslavia.
It chambered the 7.62x39mm, which would later be shared by Russia's most famous export, the AK-47. This particular model is the Yugoslavian M59/66.
This rifle was not in a good condition when I acquired it. It had slight rust on the surface, and cosmoline still plagued much of the rifle.
Thus, a total cleanup was in order.
The result was a rifle that was disassembled, wiped clean of cosmoline and reblued.
Then, with courtesy from the folks at
SG Works, I was given an opportunity to
not only restore the rifle, but give it a completely new life!
After much filing, sawing, hammering and readjustments... I was able to create this...
Whole thing took me about five days, but I was very satisfied with the results!
