So I started this season with a very short list but the last month or so has steadily worked to grow it so now I'm already set on dropping quite a few shows in 3 episodes time. This is actually a pleasant change of pace for me after the last couple of years where I've consistently been short on shows at the start of the season (I completely missed
Food Wars and
Re:Zero for example).
So, without further ado, here are my picks so far:
-- Must Watch --
Little Witch Academia (TV): I loved the animation and freshness of both OVA and even backed the second one on Kickstarter so I'm 100% on board with this one. In Trigger we trust!
Tales of Zestiria The X (2017): The game didn't particularly "click" with me the way some other Tales games did but the world always had some potential and Ufotable managed to wring out a far more compelling story that I was expecting coming in. Now, after watching season 1 fully, I'm curious to see how the second half diverges from the game (it has to, it already made some significant alterations to the plot).
-- 3 episode rule --
Chaos;Child: I'm still hopeful that, some day, another of the science adventure games will get the adaptation Steins;Gate got. I doubt this'll be that time but I'll try it one more time.
Kobayashi-san Chi no Maidragon: got roped into watching this by the folks at the Discord server RRW and Marcus H. are running but since this is KyoAni we're talking about I'm not too concerned and will probably enjoy the ride. I'm such a sucker for them that I even survived marathoning Phantom World just to see how low the studio could go (and I still found it more bearable than Kyoukai no Kanata
)
Seiren: This is apparently set in the same world as Amagami SS and I actually rather enjoyed that particular show so I'm giving this one a try. Hopefully the writing is as entertaining here as it was in its ancestor. I actually picked this up simply because the character designs looked like Amagami and it turns out that it wasn't just a coincidence
-- I'm going in blind --
Fuuka: Heard some things about this show and the rest of you folks seem to be confirming what I've heard so I'm going into this one blind and I'll see what happens.
Chain Chronicle: Another "going in blind" show for me. The description I got for this is that it's a show that starts where most other end: the hero got his party together, went up to the boss and... promptly lost. That got my interest really fast.
Kuzu no Honkai: interesting premise on this one so I'll give it a try. Having other folks here consider it is actually a nice sign that this might not be such a random pick after all.
-- 1 episode rule --
Akiba's Trip: The game was fun in a mindless fun kind of way but I doubt the anime will be able to match that. Best case scenario we get a trainwreck of such massive proportions that it turns hilarious to watch. But probably it'll just be bad. Yeah, really low expectations for this one.
BanG Dream!: Another show trying to bank on the music anime craze. It'll probably crash and burn but I'll give it a try if I have the time. But honestly, I'll probably never even watch the first episode
-- Carry overs --
Sangatsu no Lion: I wasn't sold during the first 3 episodes but thankfully something made me continue and the show really picked up for me afterwards. Now it's on top of my priorities each week. Very good show.
-- Retro Season --
Darthtabby already mentioned the
FMP! rewatching he's setting up and I'll be joining in on that since that's one of the shows that got me hooked on anime to start with.
It really is a shame we'll have to skip fumoffu but to be fair, after having seen it again recently, it doesn't really hold up as well as our nostalgia filters may think it does. It still looks great mind but the jokes aren't as hilarious as I remember them being back in the day (but maybe I was just in a bad mood). The original season and TSR on the other hand definitely stand up on plot and characters alone even with the massively outdated CGI that Gonzo put into the first season.
